Giving Back/Helping Others

Everyone has something that they are passionate about and for Andrea, one of those things is helping people. Growing up seeing her parents show kindness toward people and helping them whenever they could, it was natural for Andrea to want to do the same. Finally realizing that she could not save the world, she has done what she could do to help others within her very small corner of it. Whether it be working with the homeless population, volunteering in the community, participating in fundraising and awareness events to fight disease as well as some of the vices of the earth such as hunger, or through monetary contributions, Andrea does as much as she can.

Wanting to make an impact in a large way in memory of her father's battle with cancer, Andrea contacted St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital in New York City where her father received superb care. As a result, Christine Fontaneda, Senior Director of the Development Department at the hospital and her team, created the Calvin H. Samuels Memorial Fund where persons can donate directly to the hospital in memory of her dad, toward cancer research done by one of her father's doctors, Dr. Andrew Evans. Dr. Evans was part of the team of superb physicians who cared for and treated her father: Dr. Douglas S. Cohen and Dr. Michael Grossbard. Andrea is also a proud employee of Carolinas HealthCare System in Charlotte, North Carolina in the Leadership and Organizational Development Department and a volunteer for Levine Children's Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina which is part of Carolinas HealthCare System. Andrea's dad loved children as she does and so she thought it would be really amazing to give back to help children fight cancer and other pediatric diseases. She shared her story with Mark Griffith, Director of Children's Miracle Network at Carolinas HealthCare Foundation, and he thought that what she wanted to do was wonderful.

The two pictures above are of Andrea and her son Sean II attending Drumstrong 2009, a fundraising event to beat cancer. Levine Children's Hospital was one of several organizations who will benefit from funds raised during this wonderful and inspirational event. Please read more about the event, and get inspired by the stories that come from Levine on Levine Children's Hospital's website.

Once Andrea's book is published, a portion of the proceeds from the tri-state area of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut will go directly to the Calvin H. Samuels Memorial Fund and a portion of the proceeds from the states of North and South Carolina will go directly to Levine Children's Fund and Carolinas HealthCare Foundation, specifically for cancer research at Carolinas Medical Center's Blumenthal Cancer Center.
